Jung's Favorite Hymn
Carl Jung shares, ‘I hated going to church. The one exception was Christmas. The Christmas carol “This Is the Day That God Has Made” pleased me enormously’ (Jung and Jaffé, 1989, p. 19).
Masan:
Growing up in a protestant family with a father who is a pastor, missing the Sunday church service was not an option for Carl Jung. But he hated going to Church except on Christmas Day. It was the only Christian festival he loved. And one song in particular, was his favourite. It was the Christmas Carol "This is the Day That God Has Made."
This is from the Book of Psalms 118:24. It’s nice because it talks about God’s providence, emphasising His governance of creation. It also highlights the attitude of gratitude and mindfulness. The line “we rejoice and be glad in it” (according to me) talks about how to be grateful even in the absence of happiness and presence of hurt and distress. My interpretation of “the day” is that, our life consists of countable days and we just cannot figure out our whole life but take it through one day at a time while trusting God.
